Chelsea have reportedly contacted Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele about a possible transfer to Stamford Bridge.
According to Foot Mercato, the 24-year-old Frenchman has decided that he wants to leave Barcelona after failed contract negotiations to extend his stay at Camp Nou.
It is understood that Chelsea are one of several big clubs to already make contact with the speedster to talk about his future. Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester United have been in touch, too.
The report explains it’s still unclear on if he’ll be sold in next month’s January transfer window, or he’ll leave at the end of the season when his contract with the Spanish giants expires.
Dembele, who was called a “phenomenon” by ex-teammate Lionel Messi back in 2018, may need a clean slate to get his career back on track.
The skilful winger’s time in Barcelona has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent form.
He’s got 30 goals and 23 assists in 126 Barcelona appearances. However, he’s not yet grown into the player many expected when he joined the La Liga giants from Borussia Dortmund for an initial £96.8million deal in 2017.
However, there is a lack of goals and assists in the final third, albeit Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku are the two Blues players most equipped. Therefore, perhaps further down the line they need to find that star man.
Dembele’s shocking injury record should be an immediate red flag for clubs looking at him. Also, it’s unclear on if he could cut the grade with the physicality and pace of the Premier League.
The Frenchman may be worth a punt for teams on a free transfer, though, because his potential remains sky high.
