Report has it that Chelsea defender whose current deal expires this season, Antonio Rudiger tried to convince David Alaba to join Chelsea last summer, according to reports.
The Austria international opted to leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer at the end of last season and had attracted interest from several clubs across Europe including Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea were also in the running for Alaba and according to The Telegraph, Rudiger was attempting to persuade the defender to make the move to Stamford Bridge.
But Alaba ended up joining Real Madrid and could be lining up alongside Rudiger next season.
The Telegraph reports that Madrid’s players are expecting the Chelsea centre-back to join them on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Rudiger has already rejected Chelsea’s offer of a new contract worth £140,000 a week and talks have not progressed since the summer.
It’s understood that Madrid’s players are ‘convinced’ that Rudiger will end up in the Spanish capital next summer.
Chelsea are keen to keep Rudiger and Thomas Tuchel has also made it clear that he wants the defender to remain at Stamford Bridge.
‘We absolutely accept and are fully aware of the importance of Toni and the role that he’s playing on and off the pitch,’ Tuchel said earlier this month.
‘There is no doubt about that.
‘It’s true that nobody is bigger than the club and this is a team effort and a strong club. It’s not only about Toni and I mean that in the best way because we know what he’s doing and we’re fully aware of it.
‘In the end, we need a bit of patience.’
